The honest answer up front: we’re 11 miles from the trailhead — a 20-minute drive — on the side of the park where the nights are actually quiet. Here’s the math.
Check AvailabilityNotestone Reserve is an 11-mile, 20-minute drive from the Old Man’s Cave trailhead — on the quieter west side of Hocking Hills, 7 minutes from Rock House. That’s the whole answer, and it’s worth knowing how it compares: almost nothing in Hocking Hills is more than half an hour from anything else. “Near Old Man’s Cave” in most listings means “near the busy corridor.” Everything is near Old Man’s Cave.
So the real decision isn’t distance — it’s which twenty minutes you want. Sleep next to the region’s most crowded trailhead, or sleep in the woods and arrive by car five minutes after the people who walked from their cabin. Below: every drive time from our door, the parking strategy that actually works, and the case for the quiet side.
Measured from Notestone Reserve in Laurelville. Nothing is far; some things are quiet.
The trail is free, the parking is free, and by 10 a.m. on a Saturday both facts are irrelevant. What works:
Arrive by 9 and you park in the main lot, walk straight in, and get the gorge with room to breathe. From Notestone that means leaving around 8:35 with coffee in hand. On summer and October weekends, the lot can fill not long after 10 — then it’s overflow parking and a shuttle-length walk before your hike starts.
Crowds thin noticeably in the last two hours before sunset, and the low light in the gorge is better anyway. Pair a late Old Man’s Cave walk with an early dinner in Logan and you’ve out-planned most of the parking lot.
No entry fee, no permit, no timed tickets — Hocking Hills State Park is free. Restrooms and the visitor center sit at the main trailhead. First trip? Our first-timers guide covers footwear, cell service, and the mistakes we watch guests make every week.
The lodging packed around the Old Man’s Cave corridor shares its roads, its traffic, and its weekends. You save maybe fifteen minutes of driving and spend the difference listening to it.
Notestone Reserve is 14 private acres near Rock House — the west side, where the trailheads don’t fill and the loudest thing after dark is your own fire. You give up nothing you’ll notice: Old Man’s Cave is still 20 easy minutes away, and the two trails guests consistently rank highest are 7 and 15 minutes from your deck.
Every one of our ten stays has a private hot tub and a wood-burning fire pit, firewood included. After a day in the gorges, that’s the amenity that matters.

“Could not have selected a better place in the Hocking Hills area. This was not only clean, comfortable and close the areas we wanted to hike, it was also beautiful inside and out. One of my favorite Airbnb’s ever and our group already planning a return.”
